I love any dessert with apples. And this one was no exception! I added some caramel drizzle and had a side of ice cream with it! It's so yummy and the perfect afternoon treat.
Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups All-Purpose Flour
1 tsp Salt
1 cup Vegetable Shortening
8 tbsp Ice-Cold Water
Apple Filling:
3/4 cup Light Brown Sugar
1/4 cup All-Purpose Flour
3/4 tsp Ground Cinnamon
Ground Nutmeg, to taste
5 Apples, peeled, cored and diced
1 Lemon, zested and juiced
2 Eggs, beaten
Turbinado sugar
Rolled Oats
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees and line your baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a mixing bowl combine the shortening, flour and salt and mix together with a fork until it crumbles.
Add about 8 tbsps of ice-cold water and slowly mix with a fork until it's all combined, set it aside.
Mix your brown sugar, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg in a small bowl and set aside.
In another bowl, add your apples and sprinkle with the juice and zest of your lemon and toss lightly.
Stir in the sugar mixture and coat the apples.
Flour your countertop and knead the dough for about 2 or 3 times to smooth it out.
Take a floured rolling pin and roll the dough out about 1/4 inch thickness.
Take a large flower shaped cookie cutter and start cutting your dough. Take a knife and cut down to the base of the petals, this will help create the blossom look when folding. If you don't have one that's fine you can just fold your dough together, overlapping each fold.
Place about two tbsps of apple filling into the center and brush the dough with beaten egg and start folding petals up around the filling.
Once the blossoms is folded, brush the outside with egg wash and sprinkle with rolled oats and turbinado sugar.
Place them on your baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
Enjoy with some Caramel Sauce and Ice cream or plain!
