Nam Van Lao Dessert

Nam Van means sweet water. It's a traditional Lao dessert and can be found at any party or gathering, seriously. You can really add anything to this base and can be served warm or over crushed ice. My mom makes it with taro and jackfruit, so that is how we always make it. It's the perfect dessert on a hot day.

Ingredients:

8 cups Water

2 cans (27 oz) of Coconut Milk

1 can (20 oz) Toddy Palm sliced

1 can (20 oz) Palm Seed in syrup

1 can (20 oz) Jackfruit in syrup sliced

1 large Taro Root (12 cups) peeled and chopped into 1 inch bite size pieces

3 cups Sugar

1/2 tsp Salt

Instructions:

  1. In a large pot, boil water and taro for 10 minutes. Keep an eye on it because it will bubble over. Occasionally stir.

  2. Add coconut milk, sugar and salt and continue to boil for additional 15 minutes.

  3. Drain all the canned fruit and set aside.

  4. Turn off the stove and let it cool about 10 minutes before adding in the canned fruit.

  5. Serve warm or over ice and enjoy!
